Xiqu Centre - The Tea House Theatre

Hong Kong

As part of the Flip's work with Fisher Dachs Associates (FDA) and Xiqu Centre is The Tea House Theatre, an essential part in terms of attracting a new audience to Chinese Opera in a traditional Tea House Geometry executed in a contemporary theatre. Located in direct view from the main entrance, the space is marked by a backlit 20-metre- wide glass wall, which contains a red silk interlayer. The seating and tables within the space were designed in tandem with Bing Thom Architects to offer a range of formats within the galleried space. The 200-seat Tea House delivers shorter performances, with tea and Chinese dim sum served during each show. This project strikes a very neat balance between referencing traditional Chinese theatre form but allowing an appropriate amount of flexibility to allow a range of options for the use of the space. The theatre also very neatly integrates all the theatre technology demanded by a modern theatre executed in a well-coordinated scheme.
