The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
LONDON, UK
As head of FDA’s UK office, Flip Tanner worked in close collaboration with John Greenfield, who was the historical architect and Allies and Morrison Architects on the design of the playhouse. The basis for the design was what is thought to be one of the earliest English playhouse surviving designs known as “Document 4b”, once thought to be by the hand of Inigo Jones hence the early working title of the project as the “Inigo Jones Theatre”.
Flip worked in close collaboration with the architectural research group and the client team at The Globe to ensure the 340-seat playhouse could be delivered with the right balance between authentic references, an effective performance model and modern building standards. This is a good example of experience with working with a diverse and complex stakeholder group, as well as achieving an excellent outcome.
